Caddo Lake State Park

Caddo Lake

Summary of our trip experience

We spent 2 nights at Caddo Lake State Park in the spring of 2010 and had a fantastic trip.  If you are in the area and looking for a place to camp and enjoy a bit of backwoods atmosphere, Caddo Lake is worth a visit.  The campsites are nice and the camp store has canoe / kayak rentals along with pontoon rides down the bayou.  Keep reading below for our recommend itineraries and advice on planning your trip.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact us through our Contact Page.

Recommended Itineraries

Below are 3 Day and 1 Day recommended itineraries for your visit to Caddo Lake State Park, based on my family’s 5 day visit to Caddo Lake State Park.

3 Day Itinerary

Day 1

  1. Rent a canoe / kayak or go on the pontoon tour down the bayou

Day 2

  1. Hike the trails in Caddo Lake State Park

Day 3

  1. Rent a small fishing boat from an outfitter on Caddo Lake and do some fishing

If you have additional days or time, add this:

  1. Spend more time fishing on Caddo Lake
  2. Canoe or Kayak the other direction on the Bayou

If You Only Have 1 Day

  1. Canoe / Kayak or take the Pontoon Tour on the Bayou
  2. Hike the trails in Caddo Lake State Park

Option

  1. Swap out the above for the fishing boat rental and go fishing on Caddo Lake instead

General Advice

If you don’t have your own boat, kayak or canoe…  I would take the pontoon trip to check out the Bayou, if you are not from the area.  Going down the Bayou gives you a sense of the area and was pretty neat from my perspective.

Kids

It didn’t necessarily feel like a perfect park for kids, but it really depends on what you are in to.  We enjoy hanging around camp and watching the kids play or kicking a soccer ball around and you can do that about anywhere.  I would not take the kids out on a canoe or kayak as the bayou, just doesn’t feel like a place to take the kids out on.

Lodging

They do have cabin rentals

Camping

There are rustic tent sites to pull through RV sites.  The campground felt a little old, but our site was quite nice.  It was more set up for car camping with a tent with the picnic area behind the camper, but it was still nice and had a good amount of space to the neighboring site.
