Wilderness State Park Campground Review

Review of Wilderness State Park near Mackinaw City, Michigan

August 2015 – 3 Nights

There are 2 camping loops to the park with one of them being set on the shoreline of Lake Michigan and the other, just a few hundred yards up the road from the lake set in a pine forest.

Campsite Spacing

This is a bit mixed…  There are some really nice spaced out sites in the Pines Loop, but there are also some really tight ones as well.  I rode my bike through one end of the Lake Loop and many of them seemed to be tight.  Some of the tight spots are really just a matter of really poor campfire pit placement as well.

Campsite Quality

Campsite quality in the Pines loop is great!  The sites all have an asphalt pad to back in on and like most Michigan campgrounds, have really nice kid friendly fire pits.  I say kid friendly, because they sit high and have a thick wall around them.  The sites, of course all come with a picnic table as well.  We were on the south side of the outer loop in the Pines and had a fantastic site.

There are enough trails to keep you busy exploring by bike or by hiking for a couple of days.  I would not say that any of the trails are cut specifically for mountain bikes, but with the exception of a few spots, all are very easy trails to ride.  There are a couple of trails that lead out across from the Pines loop that are nice little hikes.  For small kids, they are probably most easily done as out and backs as they really don’t loop around well without turning it into a longer hike.  It just depends on how small the kids are.

There is no boat ramp here, but the park is right on Lake Michigan and I would have to assume you could access the lake somewhere nearby.

There is no fishing that I am aware of in the park.

This was a great park for the kids as they had some great programs for the kids to learn about insects one day and fury critters the next.  Accolades to the park staff for putting on such great programs.  My kids had a blast.

Overall Comments

This is a nice park and would be a nice place to visit if you are within a few hours drive.  You are only about a 15 minute drive from Mackinaw City as well if you want to treat yourself to some fudge or ice cream.

P.S.  This place has the nicest dump station I have ever seen with 3 separate lanes…
