Review of Warren Dunes State Park Campground in Sawyer, Michigan
July 2011 – 3 Nights
The atmosphere inside the campground is nice. There are 2 camping loops that are both fully wooded. The campground did feel somewhat crowded. Most sights seemed to have multiple cars on them, as we did as well for this trip. There is a great beach that is huge, but you do have to drive to it. The sand dunes are great!
Campsite spacing is good and most sites are wide. Things did feel somewhat crowded though.
Campsite quality was ok. The sites are wide and leveling was ok. The sites all had nice fire pits and a picnic table on them. There are no natural barriers between most of the sites.
There are hiking trails to take advantage of that cross over the sand dunes to the lake area. There are some great views from the top of the dunes.
The only lake is Lake Michigan, but there is not boat access from the park. We did play with the kayaks at the beach but it was quite a haul with the kayak to the water from the parking lot. You cannot have the kayaks in the actual swim area but there was space to the far north of the beach that was not buoyed off for swimming.
The only immediate fishing would be for larger boats on lake Michigan.
This was a good park for the kids. Kyle enjoyed riding his bike on the paved road through the campground. The sand at the beach is great for the kids, very clean with lots of space.
Overall this was a decent park. It did feel quite crowded and I believe received quite a bit of traffic from the Chicago area because of the great beach and day use area. This is a no alcohol park which helps keep things family oriented. We would stay here again; now that we are in Michigan it may be a good place to meet old friends from Illinois.
