Review of Sleeping Giants Provincial Park Campground in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

August 2015 – 2 Nights

Atmosphere

It is an all wooded campground with dirt roads and a nice quiet atmosphere.  We had a deer on more than one occasion walk right through our campsite while we were sitting there.

Campsite Spacing

Our site was spaced out quite well, which seemed to be quite normal as I wandered around the campground.  As always there were a few tight sites, but I was pleased with our site and most of what I saw.  Since the park is all wooded, you get a little barrier between sites, even if they are close together.

Campsite Quality

There was nothing special about the site quality.  Our site was sandy and our shore power connection was on the wrong side of the site for a travel trailer.  Each site did have a fire pit and picnic table.  Our site was very large and a pull through.

Trails

There are plenty of trails to choose from that include biking and hiking.  You can find short hikes for the little ones to very strenuous steep graded climbs for the serious hikers.  There are some fantastic views at the top of some of the hikes and I recommend you visit here, just for the hikes alone.

Boating

The park is right on lake Superior and there is a small lake within the park itself.

Fishing

We did not do any fishing, but I have to assume there is good fishing in the small lake and the surrounding Lake Superior if you have the right equipment.

Kids

The kids enjoyed riding their bikes around the campground loop and traffic was very minimal.  We have stayed at some parks where the traffic is really busy and people drive way too fast, but this park was very controlled.  There were speed bumps as well on the main drive.  There was a little nature center, but it was not open when we went to check it out.

Overall Comments

I would like to stay here again to do some more hiking.  The park is a bit of a drive out from Thunder Bay, so it may not be the place to stay if you are interested in hanging out in Thunder Bay itself.
