Morrison Rockwood State Park Campground Review

Morrison Rockwood State Park

Review of Morrison Rockwood State Park Campground in Morrison, Illinois

October 2010 – 2 Nights

Atmosphere

There are 3 main loops to the park that are all wooded except for a few sites at the end of the second loop. This park has a great atmosphere to it that was extremely enjoyable. It felt very relaxing and was a nice park to ride the bikes around in. The trees provided nice shade and a great setting. We were in site 12 in the first loop.

Campsite Spacing

Campsite spacing was average. Some sites were more secluded and others were side by side. We lucked out with an end site, so there was nobody to the left of us but some woods.

Campsite Quality

Our site was a large gravel back-in surrounded by grass with woods behind and to the left. We had to do minor leveling. I believe most of the sites are gravel back-ins. We loved the setting of the site and if I were to stay there again, I would try to get the same site.

Hiking

There is hiking trail that is three and a half miles long. We did not go on the hike, but I read that it gives some views of the lake.

Boating

There is a nice little lake that is very canoe friendly with a 10 hp limit. There is also a variety of small boat rentals available at a concession store at the lake. It did not take long for us to paddle to the other end of the lake and back.

Fishing

Although we did not catch any fish, there are a variety of fish stocked in the lake. We only fished for a very short time and did more paddling around the lake than anything.

Kids

Our camp site gave the kids ample room to run around and play. Traffic in the park was also not bad and allowed for us to take short walks around our loop while Kyle road his tricycle. The three separate loops were nice for towing the boys behind my bicycle in their trailer.

Overall Comments

We really enjoyed the park. If you live within a few hours of the park you really should try it out. It was very relaxing and the sites were very nice. The small lake was perfect for the canoe and all the trees gave the park a nice camping atmosphere.
