Review of Grand Marais Campground in Grand Marais, Minnesota
June 2015 – 2 Nights
The campground is right on the lake next to town in Grand Marais, Minnesota. It actually boarders both the Grand Marais Harbor Bay and Lake Superior. It is in a great spot if you want to spend some time in Grand Marais and not have to drive into town.
There is no spacing between campsites, at least where we were at. There are a few scattered campsites that have a little more space, but for the most part, the sites are stacked right on top of one another. It is not your “get away in the wilderness for some peace and quite camping” by any means.
The quality of the campsites were good. Each site appeared to have a picnic table, gravel pad, fire ring and fairly level. The fire rings were movable with cooking grates over them.
I am not aware of any trails at the park, although the area itself is scattered with state parks with many hiking trails. There is also a paved bike path that runs along the north shore and right by the park.
The park is right on Lake Superior, if you are into the big lakes and near Gun Flint Trail, if you are into some small lake fishing or canoe and kayaking.
Lake Superior is right there for the big lake fishing folks and Gun Flint Trail is scattered with small lakes for all kinds of fishing.
The kids enjoyed some rock skipping at the beach area and had a good time. I believe there is a playground along with a ball field as well, but we didn’t make it over that way.
Although this park is not for those looking to escape for some secluded camping, it is in a great location to explore the other areas of the North Shore and have a good base camp since it is in Grand Marais. Grand Portage is only 45 minutes away and the Boundary Waters are only a short drive up Gun Flint Trail. There are also a few state parks within 30 minutes with some nice water falls and hiking opportunities.
