Review of Brighton Recreation Area Campground in Howell, Michigan
August 2011 – 7 Nights
The atmosphere inside the campground is pretty good. The upper loop feels much nicer than the lower loop. The lower loop felt like the sites were much more packed in, versus the upper loop felt a little more spread out and also had more trees. The park itself is very clean and well kept up. Lake access is very close. There is direct access for kayaks or canoes from the lower loop plus a small boat ramp that is just down the hill from the upper loop. The day use area is also walking distance from the campground via a very nice trail along the lake.
Campsite spacing was fairly good. It tends to be better on the outside of the loops, but I would say the upper loop felt a little more spread out. There were no barriers between campsites.
Campsite quality was good. Like most Michigan State Parks, the fire rings are nice concrete pits and are fairly child friendly. Most sites were all grass. Ours did have some sand dirt where the grass had died off.
There are plenty of hiking, biking and equestrian trails. We did not get out on the trails during this trip, other than the nice trail that went along the lake near the campground loop, which was a very nicely groomed trail.
There is a small lake that is really two separate lakes that you can only get between the two of them by canoe or kayak. The lake is realistically only accessible by canoe, kayak or small aluminum fishing boat and trolling motor. There are small boat rentals from the campground office.
I did some fishing from the kayak and did catch a few nice size sun fish. I did see somebody catching some bass. There are fish in the lake for sure. There is a nice fishing dock near the beach at the day use area that is great for family/kids fishing.
This was a good campground for the kids with the grassy campsites, close beach and fishing dock. Our kids really enjoyed it.
Overall, it was a great park and we will visit the park again. We didn’t have a ton of time to enjoy everything at the park, as we were staying there while relocating and were quite busy. You should definitely check out the park if you are in southeast or central Michigan.
