Review of Big Bone Lick State Park Campground in Union, Kentucky
November 2011 – 1 Night
The atmosphere inside the park is nice. The park itself has some nice day use areas, a bison viewing area, lake and a few trails. The campground is more open with trees only around the parameter so you can see all the rest of the campers.
Campsite spacing is good. There is plenty of grassy area between sites. Even though they are spaced out there is open view between all of the sites so they are not all that private.
Campsite quality is ok as well. All sites are paved back-in sites with gravel next to the pad for the picnic table area. All sites have a picnic table and fire ring. As stated above the sites are spaced well but have no barriers so there is not much privacy.
There are a few short hiking trails that are perfect to take your youngsters on.
There is no boating in the park even thought there is a small lake.
We did not do any fishing but the lake is stocked with fish.
This is actually a great park for the kids. The trails are nice and short for the kids to handle. Even though the bison viewing was disappointing the kids still got a kick out of it. There is very nice play equipment both in the campground and in the day use areas. Being that the sites are not very private you can see the kids playing in the grass and keep your eye on them easily.
In general I would say this would be a great local weekend campground if you have small children. I would not travel great distances to stay at this park, but if you are passing thru and need a nice place to stop then I would definitely stop in.
